Impact Assessment & Monitoring

So that Indigenous governments can make informed decisions on whether to consent to Projects or activities that may impact their Aboriginal or Treaty rights, we facilitate Indigenous-led impact assessment and monitoring.

Impact assessments are carried out to reduce the negative impacts and increase the positive impacts of development projects on communities and the environment. Monitoring a project while it is being constructed, operated or decommissioned can identify what impacts are actually occurring and identify steps that can address issues.

These processes intentionally use Indigenous knowledge systems and laws together with western science to assess the potential project and cumulative effects on a community or region and identify culturally appropriate ways to limit, avoid or manage impacts.

Indigenous-led assessments can ensure that Indigenous knowledge systems and laws are used to create community-specific assessment processes to determine if consent should be given for a project.
